GFHO-SL USING AGRICULTURE TO REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN SIERRA LEONE

Global Farming and Humanitarian Organization is non-profit organization that is geared towards providing sustainable food security and livelihood for less privileged communities. The organization thinks unemployment is a key reason for poverty and has held talks with various community heads to embark in agriculture as a means to minimize or end unemployment.Agriculture (including forestry and fisheries) is the mainstay of the Sierra Leonean economy employing over 60 percent of the labor force mostly at the subsistence level. Rice and cassava are staple foods of the country, while cocoa, coffee, oil palm, and cashew nuts are the major cash crops. The agricultural sector is constrained by several factors including lack of improved inputs, labor shortages, and post-harvest losses. Land degradation and deforestation have resulted in declining soil fertility, which in turn has undermined sustainable agricultural development in the country. GFHO-SL through their donor partners and the government of Sierra Leone will embark on supplies of farm equipment and  training for local farmers. The organization lead Mr. Alimamy Kabba thinks it’s high time people begin to farm not just to provide food security but to create employment thereby solving other social security challenges ranging from rape, prostitution thievery and high rate of dependency. GFHO-SL thinks people should understand basic agricultural ideas to help them to know what to farm in their regions and how to go about it so as to save the environment from natural disasters.Sighting the reasons for the August 2018 mudslides in Freetown, local farmers should be guided as to what agricultural activities should be engaged in special areas. The organization wishes to collaborate with Environmental Protection Agencies and Community  Authorities to undertake environmental protection projects alongside the normal farming projects which is to help boost GFHO-SL’s main Humanitarian work goals.
